Date: 2024-09-18 04:07 am (UTC)They take Beyond’s cigarette straight from faer hand, and Beyond doesn’t think now’s the time to tell them that new research is showing that something like them’s really better off getting a vice they can inject or, honestly, rub on the gums. Beyond’s got some great crystals straight from the cavern, some great spirits, too, if they’re a drinker, and they don’t need to lie to Beyond, fae knows dwellers can drink. And fae could lie and tell us with a straight face that it’s because fae values the autonomy of all the commonfolk of Mirror and sure, that one’s obvious, but that wouldn’t stop it. But it’ll humor us with the truth instead: if fae keeps the silence awkward enough, this bastard’s gonna break and say something fae can use, which is exactly what happens when after one huff, two, three, Dove says, “So do a lot of people.”
And then fae grins, because fae’s got them, and fae says, “But I’m not making this offer to a lot of people: I’m making it to you.”
Fill: “You Deserve Better.” II (Original Fiction – Woofwoofverse)
Date: 2024-09-18 08:53 pm (UTC)It happened after he’d seen Her, because the only time anyone noticed he was in pain was after he’d seen Her. What he’d remember is that day he didn’t even need stitches, was only bruised and sullen and wanting to see his brother, who was of course out at the time, was out more and more of the time it seemed.
(He wouldn’t be sure if he started fighting with Loyal more because he was out, or if Loyal was out more because they fought, but he’d know that when all was said and done he resented both, but not as much as he resented himself.)
The ascendant wasn’t one of his, because ezi was supposed to be Valiant, and it was a period where the entire House was passing something around. He’d already caught it, and he’d catch it again before the thing had passed.
He hadn’t bothered to learn this ascendant’s name, and he’d never been alone with ezi again that he could think of, but it wasn’t because he’d ratted ezi out, though his handlers, if he’d told them, which he hadn’t—even now he hadn’t, was still working up the courage to discuss it with his therapist, who he wasn’t quite sure he trusted—would’ve expected it of him. He would’ve expected it of him. That was the type of person he’d been.
Ezi had helped him into the bath, and ezi had gotten him ice, more ice than his handlers would have at the time, because back then they’d still hated him and he couldn’t blame them, considering he’d hated them right back. The ascendant hadn’t been kind, which made sense—ascendants weren’t crafted for kindness, they were crafted for brutality, and that wasn’t easy to turn off.
But ezi had gotten him more ice than he’d needed, and he’d been freezing, and he’d been snotty and callous and as cruel to ezi as anyone else, and ezi had taken it, and outside his rooms, quiet enough only he could hear, ezi had said, “You deserve better.”
And he’d been livid. He’d cursed at this unfamiliar ascendant of the Goddess’s house, called ezi every hurtful thing he could glean—and he was good at gleaning, had had over three hundred years to perfect it—ezi was insecure about from their scant hours together in the precious moments it took his handlers to open the door and drag him in in a flurry of apology that quickly turned to verbally berating him for the disrespect of it all, demanding to know why.
And he hadn’t told them, even as he stood there, livid and, under it all, so, so confused, because he was supposed to be the luckiest man alive and ezi had said he deserved better. He had spent two hundred years wanting this, was supposed to have made it, was as close to loved as the Goddess could love a man, and ezi dared say he deserved better.
He was still aching from it.
